MEANING OF PORCH AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE HOUSE

MEANING OF PORCH AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE HOUSE

The main function of porches is to increase the aesthetic beauty of the structure and plays an important role in a building. The porch is the structure provided in a building to have a shelter cover.

The porch is constructed in the front section of the structure. A porch constructed in a house helps to increase functionality. A porch also protects users from rainwater and wind. It adds a relaxed and enjoyable space to the user.

The porch is broader and the verandah is a type of porch. The porch is surrounded by the meshes on its sides whereas the veranda is an open air space with a roof.

Purpose of A Porch:

  • It is the first thing the guests can see at your home.
  • It can add an aesthetic value to your home.
  • You can enjoy outdoor times on a porch.
  • It shelters you from rain and heavy winds.
  • It adds to the grandeur of the home if designed properly.
  • The porch expands the aesthetical view of the structure.
  • It adds a space for you where you can relax and enjoy.

Different Types of Porch:-

  • Open Porch As the name suggests, Open Porches are actually open- they do not have an enclosure on either side. Floors are either concrete or wooden floors or slabs. However, it can be supported by a roof from the top. As the sidewalls are absent in this type of porch, it is more like an outdoor area. The roofing material is supported over the columns. Here you can enjoy the breeze and bask in the natural atmosphere.
  • Front Entry Porch is in the form of a small concrete slab just adjacent to the front door of the house. This porch is a very simple place and it is not a place for you to relax. It has a few steps that direct towards the main door of the house and some decorative elements are placed here to increase the aesthetic value. Chairs or plants can be placed in this space
  • Back Porch  The Back porch is constructed at the backside of the house. The back porch looks similar to the front porch and also has a similar design as the front porch. The Back porch gives you privacy and security where you can stay without any disturbance of the people. The back porch has a kitchen combined with it.
  • Screened Porch The Screened Porch has a roof and the screen takes up space on all four interior verandas. If you want more living space, you can consider a glass veranda. It can serve as a continuum for your living room.
  • Farmer’s Porch  It is a type of porch that is constructed in the form of a farmhouse. It may construct elevated or up to the ground level and its width is kept equivalent to the front side of the house. The farmer’s porch is covered and supported by the beams and has railings that are installed at its end. It is a long and big space where enough people can accommodate it.
  • Rained Porch As understood from its name, it protects from the rain. The roof is extended for this porch. The roof is extended beyond the porch to ensure it does not get wet by about 3-6 feet. Also, the extension is dipped at a certain angle so that the porch below is completely protected from the rain. You can enjoy the rainfall in this porch without getting wet.
  • Verandah Veranda is an open-air porch that is located on the front and sides of the house. It has a platform as floor and it is sometimes enclosed by railings. Its level is mostly kept the same as ground level. You can enjoy the outdoors in the veranda.

  • Lanai Lanai is primarily built for homes built in hot climates. The design and concept are similar to the porch except for the larger living space with a roof.
  • Wrap around Porch It wraps your house. The whole house is wrapped or part of it is wrapped. The wrapping starts from the front part of the home and turns at least one corner of the home. It is the oldest style of the porch and is very rarely used in modern construction.
  • Deck A deck is a flat, elevated platform that connects a house to the outside. Decks are usually composed of wood and are raised above the ground. Barbecuing, dining, and seating areas can all be included. A railing is usually required to surround a deck. In some circumstances, a canopy or pergola might cover this outside construction.
  • Detached Porch This porch is not attached to the house, unlike other porches. Instead, it’s a free-standing structure that looks similar to a pavilion or gazebo. It can be connected to the main structure via a walkway or a footpath, and it can be designed in various ways. However, the cost of constructing the detached porch is higher because it is a distinct structure.
