Piyush Goyal asks traders to present plaints against big e-trailers properly before CCI

Commerce and industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday asked the traders community to properly present their complaints against big online retail firms before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) so that justice can be done, hours after the Supreme Court refused to entertain the pleas of Amazon and Flipkart, challenging an order permitting the CCI to carry out a preliminary investigation into the alleged violation of the competition law. While addressing traders on National Traders’ Day, he said that large companies, which were spending crores on lawyers to ensure that nothing happens on retailers’ complaints, have failed. Goyal assured full support to the trader community from the government and asked traders to bring violations in law to the notice of the government.“Large companies who spent crores on lawyers to ensure that nothing happens on your (retailers’) complaints, have failed,” he said.

Asking traders to prepare themselves, Goyal said: “Whatever complaints you have, present all those in front of CCI, so that justice can be done”.On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain pleas of e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart, saying that challenging the enquiry is like wanting a notice before the registration of an FIR under the criminal law and asked them to submit themselves to the probe by the CCI.The commission, had last year, ordered a probe against Flipkart and Amazon for alleged malpractices, including deep discounting and tie-ups with preferred sellers on their platforms, following which both the companies had moved the high court seeking quashing of the order.Emphasising that traders need to be protected, Goyal further said that if businesses want to do e-commerce in India, they need to take domestic retailers along.Compliance reduction

Goyal said that the government is working towards simplifying legal metrology and creating a single window online system to stop harassment of traders.”I’m trying to simplify the Legal Metrology Act for weights and measures and decriminalise it, reduce the harassment of the trader community,” he said, adding that work is on to simplify the compliances related to retail trader for ease of doing business and do everything online so that they don’t need to go to government offices.
