HIGHWAY SAFETY DESIGN PARAMETERS -MCPC
Under the able and dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. Jagroop Singh & Dr. Rajeev Bhatia, Head of the Civil Engineering Department. The Civil Engineering Department of Mehr Chand Polytechnic College showcased an innovative project at Inno-tech 2026 held at Pushpa Gujral Science City in April 2026, highlighting practical approaches to modern road safety.
Titled “Highway Safety and Design Parameters,” the project was prepared by students of the Civil 2nd year, Anish Kumar and Subhedra Kumar, Prabhjot Singh, Himanshu, Karanjeet Sandhu, Rohit, and Suryansh, focusing on critical aspects of safe and efficient highway infrastructure. Emphasizing on the importance of geometric design elements such as curves, gradients, sight distance, and super elevation, alongside safety installations like barriers and escape ramps.

The model demonstrated advanced features, including water-repelling groynes for erosion control, retaining walls for slope stability, and highway escape ramps designed to stop runaway vehicles. Special attention was given to hillside safety through breast walls, rockfall barriers, and wire mesh protection systems. Techniques like hydroseeding with CTA bars and shotcrete with soil nailing were presented as eco-friendly and effective slope stabilization methods.
An innovative highlight was the “Red Road” concept, designed to improve visibility and alert drivers in accident-prone zones(forest area). The project successfully integrated structural and non-structural safety measures, showcasing a comprehensive understanding of real-world highway engineering challenges.
The Project was appreciated by the judges and the audience for its practical application in highway safety. Principal Dr.Jagroop Singh appreciated the efforts of staff and Students of the Civil Engineering department.
The participation reflected the institution’s commitment to practical learning and innovation, earning appreciation for its relevance to current infrastructure needs and road safety advancements.
