Logistics cost in India at 7.8% – 8.9% of GDP in 2021-22: NCAER 1st Official Logistic EstimatesOn December 14, 2023, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) released secondary data-based estimates with guidance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) experts. As per it, India’s logistic costs ranged between 7.8% and 8.9% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during 2021-22, down from 8.7-9.9% during 2011-12. These are the first official estimates of logistics costs in India.

  • It should be noted that these estimates are a part of report titled ‘Logistics Costs in India: Assessment and Long-term Framework’ released by the Logistics Division, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI).
  • This report was officially unveiled by Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, DPIIT, Sumita Dawra, Special Secretary, Logistics Division, DPIIT, and other dignitaries including Deputy Country Director, ADB, Hoe Yun Jeong.

What is in the report?
i.Baseline aggregated logistics cost estimate
ii.Framework for long-term logistics cost calculation.
Assessment
The secondary data for estimates was used from the Supply Use Tables and National Account Statistics of MoSPI and the NCAER’s 2019 study, “Analysis of India’s Logistics Costs”.
Why these estimates required?
Through the report, a framework is being developed, using 2021-22 for first estimates,  which will aid in calculating credible logistics cost estimates. This will help in aligning India’s logistics costs with global benchmarks by 2030, as per the Logistics Policy launched in September 2022.
About Logistics Policy:
The policy aims to place India in the top 25 of the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) by 2030. It already saw a six-place improvement to 38 in 2023. It seeks to reduce costs and enhance the competitiveness of Indian industry.
Highlights:
i.India’s logistics costs saw a dip during 2014-15 to 2016-17, from 8.3-9.4% to 7.8-8.8%, due to a faster growth in nominal GDP than in logistic costs, and a fall in fuel prices.
ii.This report recommends hybrid approach i.e. combining primary and secondary survey data along with real-time Big Data to estimate logistics costs comprehensively, covering trade flows, product types, industry trends, OD pairs, etc.
iii.It also suggested the estimation of logistic costs on regular basis to ensure evidence-based decision making.

India’s IIP Hits 16-Month High of 11.7% in October 2023; Retail Inflation Rises to 3-Month High
India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) has increased to a 16-month high, marking an 11.7% year on year (YoY) increase, in October 2023 compared to 6.2% YoY growth in September 2023. This was mainly due to the robust performances in the manufacturing (10.4%), electricity (20.4%), and mining (13.1%) sectors’ output.

  • The robust industrial growth contributes to a positive outlook for 2023-24 Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The 1st advance estimates of GDP data are anticipated on 5 January 2024, ahead of the Interim Budget for FY25.
  • In contrast, the retail inflation, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), has increased to a 3-month high of 5.55% in November 2023,  partly because of a seasonal spike in vegetable prices.
  • Earlier, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) adjusted the economic growth projection for FY24 upward by 50 basis points to 7%, anticipating a 6.5% GDP expansion in the December quarter.
