COMMON METHODS OF PRESERVATION OF TIMBER

COMMON METHODS OF PRESERVATION OF TIMBER

There are several methods of preserving timber, including:

  1. Pressure treatment: This involves placing the timber in a pressure vessel and impregnating it with a preservative chemical under high pressure. This process is also known as “tanalising” and is commonly used for outdoor applications like fencing, decking, and landscaping.
  2. Chemical treatment: This involves the application of preservative chemicals to the surface of the timber, usually by brushing or spraying. The chemical is absorbed by the timber and helps protect it from decay and insect attack. The most commonly used preservative chemicals include copper, boron, and creosote.
  3. Heat treatment: This involves heating the timber to a high temperature (around 200°C) in an oxygen-free environment. This process is known as “thermowood” and helps improve the timber’s durability and stability, making it ideal for use in outdoor applications.
  4. Surface coatings: This involves applying a protective coating to the surface of the timber to help prevent moisture from entering and causing decay. Examples of surface coatings include varnish, paint, and wood stains.
  5. Natural methods: Some timber species, such as cedar and redwood, have natural resistance to decay and insect attack. Using these species for outdoor applications can help reduce the need for chemical treatments.

It’s important to choose the right preservation method depending on the intended use of the timber and the local environmental conditions. Consultation with a timber preservation specialist is recommended for best results.
