What is an e-book?

An eBook is a book in electronic format. It is downloaded to a computer, PC, Mac, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or any other kind of reading device, and is read on the screen. It can have numbered pages, tables of contents, pictures, and graphics, exactly like a printed book.

eBooks offer many benefits and advantages, and this article shows a few of them.

An e-book is a lot like the books that you would find on our Library’s shelves but in electronic format. E-books can be read on your phone, tablet, computer, or e-reader. Search for them in our catalog, the same way you would regular books, or via specific tools in our E-Library.

We love all the formats that our Library offers—from books on CD to large print books, and everything in between—but, e-books do offer some benefits over other formats.

Before I received an e-book reader as a gift, I was completely against them. I was among those paper book fundamentalists that considered e-books almost as a heresy and reading them almost a mortal sin.

Gradually, reluctantly, I began to use my e-book reader, and to my surprise, I got used to it. It clearly has a lot of advantages over paper books, so I decided to take advantage of both worlds. Before, I read paper books only. Now, I would say that I dedicate 50% to e-book reading, and this percentage may increase in the future.

After download, all you have to do is click on the link and the eBook will automatically download to your computer, to a folder of your own choice depending upon the conditions of the publisher.

After downloading, you don’t have to be connected to the Internet in order to read the eBook. You can stay offline. If you wish to have it printed, it is very easy. Many publishers allow that. Just click on the print button, to print the eBook with your home printer depending on the conditions of the publisher.

E-Book benefits

Below you will find the reasons that made me change my mind about e-book readers:

  1. Portability: My e-book reader is small and light. It fits easily in my handbag, so I take it with me everywhere I go.
  1. Capacity: In the past, I had to take three or four books with me every time I went on holidays, just in case I found one of them boring, or I read more quickly than expected. Now, I can take more than 200 books without needing extra luggage.
  1. eBooks can show links, for easy access to more information and related websites.
  2. eBooks are searchable. You can easily search for any information in an eBook, instead of turning page after page.
  3. eBooks can be interactive and contain audio, video, and animations, which can enhance the message that the author is trying to convey.
  4. Since eBooks are delivered through the Internet, there are no packing and shipping expenses.
  5. eBooks can be printable so if you wish to read an ebook in the traditional way, you can very inexpensively print it with your home printer or at any printing shop.
  6. Read anytime, anywhere: If you enjoy reading on the go, you can take your whole library with you—on the bus, train, or airplane; or even to stand in line at the grocery store.
  1. Save a trip to the Library: There’s no doubt that the Library is a wonderful place to visit, but you won’t have to go very far to borrow e-books. Once your e-book is available, you can download it 24 hours of the day, any day of the year, all from the comfort of your own home.
  1. eBooks are delivered almost instantaneously. You can purchase, download, and start reading them within minutes, without leaving your chair. You don’t have to go to a bookstore to buy them, nor wait for them for days, weeks and sometimes more to arrive in the mail.
  2. No trees are required to manufacture paper for the pages of eBooks.
  3. When you need certain information, you can get it immediately, by downloading an eBook.
  4. Many eBooks are sold nowadays with bonuses, which you usually do not get with a printed book. This adds value to your purchase.
  5. Better reading: One of the steps reading experts advice for better reading is to underline and take notes. This is very easily done in an e-book. At the end, you can export your notes and you will have a personalized resume of the books you read.
  1. Reading and eating: Have you had the annoying experience of not being able to read and eat at the same time? I did, but not anymore; the e-book will remain ‘open’ on the page you are reading as long as you wish.
  1. eBooks take up less space. You practically don’t need any space to store them. You don’t need a library or a room for them. You can store hundreds and thousands of eBooks on your computer or reading device.
  2. eBooks are portable. You can carry a whole library of hundreds of books with you, on CD, in a laptop, smartphone or any ebook reader, without worrying about their weight.
  3. With today’s technology, you can read eBooks everywhere, on the bus, on trains, on airplanes, and while standing in line.
  4. You can carry with you a great number of eBooks wherever you go, which you cannot do with ordinary books.
  5. Search in seconds: With many e-books, you have the ability to search through an entire book in seconds. Easily search for information in an e-book, instead of turning page after page to find what you’re looking for.
  1. Customize how you read: When you’re reading an e-book, you can adjust the text size to be as small or as large as you’d like. You’ll also have options to adjust other settings, such as margins, line spacing, font style, brightness, and much more.
  1. Avoiding annoyances: Do you frequently lose the last page you were reading? This often happened to me in the past, but again, not anymore; the e-book reader saves your place and keeps it in memory for you.

23. Fonts in eBooks can be resized, making it easier to read on small screens. It is also possible to listen to some of the eBooks, just like listening to audiobooks.

  1. eBooks are very easy to sell and distribute because you do not need a store or shop.
  2. It is very simple and easy to purchase and download an eBook. People living in big modernized cities, in a remote village in a faraway country, or on a small island, can equally access an eBook. It takes them the same amount of time to purchase and download an eBook, provided they have an Internet connection.
  3. It is possible to purchase an eBook 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from the comfort of your own house or office. You can purchase and download an eBook, even if you are on a vacation. All you need is a laptop, tablet. smartphone, or a reading device, and an Internet connection.
  4. People are already spending a lot of time in front of their computers, so why not read an eBook, instead of doing something else?
  5. Free books: There are thousands of free e-books on the Internet. You can save a lot of money and time using an e-book reader; there is no longer any need to go to the book store or the library anymore.
  1. Discretion<Are you reading a steamy book like Sade’s novels or the Fifty Shades of Grey series? This is no problem–you can read these kinds of books in public, and only you will know it.
  1. Gain of space: Forget having tons of paper books. Your library will only take up megabytes on your computer. There are actually some free programs that help you organize your books like a pro. You will never lose a book again.
  1. Avoid traveling: You do not have to go to the library to get e-books. In fact, a lot of libraries have integrated e-books in their systems so that you can borrow them online. You do not have to return them either. Once the book is due, you will lose your “license” so that somebody else can read the e-book.

Considering eBooks, such eBooks disseminate knowledge not pages, which means that it is not correct to evaluate the price of an eBook according to the number of its pages.

The price should be determined by the information offered its usefulness and its relevance, and also by the amount of practical knowledge, inspiration, motivation, tips and advice it offers, and the uniqueness of the information.

Keep in mind that you can also use your tablet to read, or even your computer. There are a lot of free programs out there for reading e-books.

BENEFITS OF PUBLISHING AN EBOOK

Ebooks are popular and sales increase every year.

Ebooks have a global reach. Distribute your book via global retailers and aggregators, and it’ll be widely available to readers around the world.

Ebooks are straightforward to publish. It’s a multi-step process, but the ebook industry has matured over the past five years, creating different options to get your book published that match your skill level.

Ebooks offer instant reader gratification. Readers can purchase your book and start reading it immediately. Features like Amazon’s one-click ordering make impulse buys a no-brainer.

An ebook is portable. Readers take their phones and digital devices with them most places, so it’s easier to carry around multiple digital books than it is to carry around a collection of paperbacks.

Ebooks are free to sell. You don’t have to pay a retailer or aggregator to sell your books. Instead, you pay them a commission based on your royalties when you sell a book. That said, some aggregators have a different business model that entails charging an upfront fee instead of taking a percentage of your royalties.

Ebooks are inexpensive to create. There are some bare minimum essentials you need to invest in to self-publish your book, but most of the steps can be done by you at no, or minimal, cost.

Ebooks can contain live links. Include clickable URLs in your ebook. This allows you to direct your readers to your website, blog, and social media networks but also to any other external information source.

Ebooks can be revised and updated. Given how quickly nonfiction information changes, it’s essential to be able to keep your book current and accurate. Once you’ve updated your text, it’s quick and easy to republish your book.

Ebook copies can be given for free. Digital files are easy and free to send to reviewers, readers, or anyone else to whom you want to provide a complimentary copy.

Ebook copies are low-cost marketing tools. Your book establishes your subject-matter expertise, and, once released, allows you to call yourself an author.

Ebooks have a flexible pricing strategy. As there are no printing costs associated with ebooks, you can experiment with different discount pricing strategies.

Ebooks are inexpensive to purchase. Readers who are reticent to buy a book at the higher paperback price may be persuaded to invest in your book at the lower ebook price.
