SURAT: Diamond City expedited execution and management of various projects under the Smart Cities Mission to catapult itself to the top position among top 20 smart cities in the country. Earlier the city was ranked fourth in the ranking declared by the union ministry of housing and urban affairs.

“We were placed fourth, while Ahmedabad was in sixth position among a total of 100 cities identified for the ranking. The rankings are revised after monitoring overall performances including execution, management, financial aspects on a regular basis,” a Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officer told TOI.

At present 65 projects worth Rs 1,573 were completed while 15 projects worth Rs 1,350 are under execution. For these projects SMC and Surat Smart City Development Ltd receive 50 percent grant from the Centre and 25 percent from state. The remaining 25 percent is used from its own funds.
