The village map is taken to assign a khasra number to each parcel of land available in that village.

Khasra Number is a unique number that is assigned to a parcel of land in rural areas. Khasra Number is like the survey number or plot number assigned in urban areas. Khasra or khasra number is one thing you would certainly need if you want to proceed with a land record search in rural India. This is why you have to keep the khasra number of the land or plot handy before you proceed with a land record search, online or offline. For identification purposes, plot numbers are assigned to each piece of land in urban India. Similarly, a numeral identity is also assigned to agricultural land in rural areas. This land identity number is Khasra (ख़सरा) number. Sometimes also written as Khesra (खेसरा), a khasra number is always required when you try to access land records, bhulekh.

Who Assigns the Khasra Number:-

The person responsible for arranging the documents for local land revenue is known as the Lekhpal, and the village Patwari helps him while maintaining the upkeep of land revenue papers. So, in turn, it is the lekhpal and the village Patwari that assigns the numbers for the various plots of land that come under the village.

 Purpose of Khasra number

A khasra number is an identity provided to a land parcel. To access any information about your land, you will have to provide khasra number. Similarly, this is the number that will be used to notify you, in case there is any official communication with regard to your land parcel. This includes land-related frauds that are quite common, especially in rural India.

Khasra Number’s Importance:

Now that we know what is khasra, we must understand the significance of the khasra number.

A khasra number is an essential parameter to establish rights to a property. It is one of the most crucial components of the Sharja document. The Sharja comprises a full map of the village’s territory. This document is prepared and maintained by the Lekhpal and the Patwari respectively.

  • The Lekhpal is responsible for preparing the document.
  • The Patwari is appointed to maintain and update the record on a regular basis.

Note: The plot number and the khasra number are not usually the same. If a plot or piece of land is sold, gifted, split, or post-mutated, the khasra number changes correspondingly.

For instance, suppose the khasra number allotted to a plot of land is 64. It is later separated into two pieces, and the newly allocated khasra numbers will be 64/1 and 64/2.
