A portion of an under-construction flyover on the Gurugram-Dwarka Expressway near Daulatabad collapsed on Sunday morning. Three workers have reportedly been injured and rushed to hospital.

Police along rescue teams are getting the slab and debris lifted to ensure nobody is trapped there. According to police, no casualties have been reported so far. Senior NHAI officials have reached the spot but the reason behind the collapse is still to be confirmed.

It may be noted that the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari visited the Dwarka Expressway this month to assess the status of the project and suggest measures to ensure that work is expedited on this project, which has been in progress since 2008.

A portion of the under-construction elevated road on Dwarka Expressway, National Highway 248-BB connecting Delhi and Gurugram, collapsed on Sunday morning. Three persons sustained injuries, said the police.

Project Director confirmed to the sources that a span had collapsed near Daultabad village. He said he had directed the contractor to find the exact reasons for the accident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, West, Deepak Saharan, said three persons were injured and under treatment.

In a similar incident, a portion of under-construction elevated road had collapsed on Gurugram-Alwar Highway last year.

Taking a genuine perspective on the breakdown of a segment of under-development flyover in Delhi on Sunday, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is framing a board to examine the reason for occurrence. Likewise, it has suspended key authorities of the worker for hire and oversight specialist till the examination is finished, a NHAI discharge said.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Sunday said it has suspended key staff of engineer Larsen and Toubro and management expert AECOM after a part of an under-development raised street on Dwarka freeway imploded toward the beginning of today. 

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had inspected the progress of the Dwarka Expressway highway along with Union Minister of State and local MP Rao Inderjit Singh on March 5.

Eight-lane flyovers and six service lanes are also being constructed on this expressway. Not only this, India’s first four-level interchange will be built on this expressway near Dwarka in Delhi, with tunnel or underpass, grade road, elevated flyover and another flyover above that flyover. An eight-lane tunnel of 3.6-km length will be built near Dwarka for the airport. This urban road tunnel will be the first of its kind in India.

The 29-km highway project was conceived in 2006 and was expected to be completed before 2010. But it has been delayed for more than a decade now largely due to land acquisition issues.

The accident site is being secured with necessary precautions taken to prevent any further damages, the statement said.

Sources said: “An unfortunate incident happened in Gurgaon wherein under erection span and adjoining span (between pier no. 107-108 and Pier No. 108-109) of under construction flyover of package-III Dwarka Expressway collapsed during the early hours of 28.03.2021 around 7:30 AM.”

No causalities were reported and three workers suffered minor injuries, who have been discharged from hospital after receiving first-aid.

Earlier, a team of officials from the National Highways Authority of India, including the regional officer and the project director, also visited the site.

Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier this month visited the expressway to inspect progress of the 30-kilometre project which is being built at the cost of Rs 10,000 crore.

“Authority has seen the episode genuinely and forthcoming the result of the examination by the board, the concerned key work force of the Contractor M/s L&T and Supervision Consultant M/s AECOM have been suspended according to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of NHAI,” the NHAI said in a proclamation.
